Herbal Medicine Awareness Week. 

As part of Herbal Medicine Awareness Week, Jenny Jones has worked with a number of Medical Herbalists to bring a selection of talks This year the week is dedicated to Herbal First Aid. There will be a number of events around the country, with talks and demonstrations.

'Herbal First Aid'

A talk by Amanda Cutbill MNIMH, Medical Herbalist, to be held at The Council Room at The Festival Hall.

The subject of the talk will be herbal first aid, focussing on those aspects that might be particularly relevant to the holiday season e.g. upset stomach, sun burn, nervous flyers etc. There will also be an opportunity to ask  more about a  herbalist's approach to any chronic conditions which are of particular interest to members of the audience.

Starting at 7pm

Fee £3.00 paid on the night. The Festival Hall is signposted and is a short 5 minute walk from Alderley Edge railway station.

Herb Day. 

The Herb Day at Garden Organic (HDRA Ryton Gardens of old), is a partnership between the Herb Society and the Gardens. If you haven't visited Garden Organics you are in for a treat. There is a very large herb garden devoted to both western and eastern herbs, and wonderful gardens and display areas illustrating all aspects of organic gardening.

The Herb Day will be a celebration of herbs with guided tours by members of the Society through the herb gardens and a herb market where everything herbal can be bought. There will also be an opportunity for members to ply their herbal wares in the market at a very favourable rate.

Caroline Holmes, garden designer and past President of the Society, will talk about her design for the Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle, and Sophie Grigson is doing another of her wonderful cooking demonstrations.'

Sat 28th - Sun 29th June ‘The Sulgrave Food Show’
 
The Herb society will be taking part at the Sulgrave Food Show to be held at Sulgrave Manor the food show is a showcase for the best that that the region has to offer in the food and drink market.

There will be a food market selling local foods, and a rolling programme of cooking demonstration by local chefs.  Our very own Jan Greenland will be demonstrating on both days her theme will be the historic use of herbs in food. We will also have the Herb Society stand at the show.

Monday 7th July 2008 President's Day  

Join us for our 2008 President's Day event, to meet our current President Sarah Raven, writer, broadcaster, and expert teacher on creating beautiful and productive gardens. The day takes place in Sarah's garden at Perch Hill Farm, Willingford Lane, Brightling, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, TN32 5HP.

Places for this event are strictly limited to 30, so it's first come, first served, so why not take advantage of our new booking by PayPal system detailed on the 2008 President's Day page to ensure you reserve your place? Book early to avoid disappointment.

'Nourishing Your Nerves' @ Springfield Sanctuary

Herb Society members and the general public are invited to join Jenny Jones FNIMH, Sarah Head B Soc Sci, Dip SFT, MNFSH and Debs Cook Council Member for a fun herb filled day at Springfield Sanctuary in the sunny Cotswolds.

There will be opportunities to learn about herbs that grow in the hedgerows to nourish your nerves, Jenny will be giving a talk, we have hands on workshops and the opportunity to walk around the Sanctuary and pick herbs that are in full bloom in August.

12noon - 4pm

Please bring a picnic lunch and sensible shoes (wellies if its wet) as the Sanctuary is down a hill.

Saturday 23rd August 2008 Members Picnic At The National Herb Centre  

Join us for what we hope will become an annual Herb Society members event.

The day will include a talk (theme to be announced), a walk around the gardens and the chance to treat yourself to some herbs from the huge selection at the NHC. This is a relaxed event to enable members to meet each other and talk about herbs as well as having a fun herby day out. Bring a picnic lunch with you which can all sit and enjoy in the gardens of the centre. Or treat yourself to a wonderful herby lunch from the Bistro at the centre.

Saturday 27th September 2008 AGM & Conference 

Our AGM and conference is to be held at Sulgrave Manor once more. The first part of the day will be devoted to the Society's AGM which is free to all members to attend.

The theme for our 2008 conference is 'Stress & Relaxation'. Anne McIntyre will be giving a talk on stress and relaxation, Christina Stapley will be demonstrating how to make relaxing balms and lotions and Mike Cullen will be giving another of his highly entertaining cookery demonstrations.
We always enjoy a wonderful lunch full of herbal delights and this is included in the ticket price. There will also be chance to look around the herb gardens at Sulgrave and talk to council members.

Saturday 18th October Volunteers Day  

A day for to say 'Thank You' to all our volunteers. The day is free to attend for Herb Society volunteers and lunch will be provided, but feel free to bring along homemade cakes and biscuits to go with the coffee and tea.

Programme - Jan Greenland will give a talk and slideshow on 'Edible Herbs From The Ice Age' and also a Cookery Demonstration.

Plus there will be time set aside for volunteers to interact and have questions answered that they may have re volunteering, discuss ideas for future events, and ways to be more involved helping the HS. Volunteers will also have the chance to meet Jenny Jones the Herb Society Volunteers Co-Ordinator and Events Organiser. Plus the new volunteers policy will be discussed.

Our very own council member and wizard herbie cook gives one of her delightfully entertaining talks as part of the Chadkirk Festival.

This weekend residential course is run by Daniel Coaten and takes place Redfield Community in Bucks. Making essential oils etc is a fascinating process in its own right, and one that is always thoroughly rewarding. The aim of the course is to provide an easy, step-by-step guide to making your own essential oils and distillate waters from raw herb material for both personal and therapeutic application, so that you can effectively and safely employ these procedures at home. Golden and Delicious – Edwardian Gardens

Caroline Holmes a past chairman of the Herb Society remembers ‘the gardens of a golden afternoon’ through the architecture of Harold Peto and the colours in Gertrude Jekyll’s plantings. Away from billowing herbaceous borders, the kitchen garden reached a zenith of fruit and vegetable culture – visual and edible feasts. Caroline Holmes is a garden historian with a passion for scent and food who speaks worldwide, and also an author and broadcaster.

Apple Day.

Sulgrave has a large orchard that comes in to its own on the Apple Day Weekend. Every aspect of the fruit is celebrated and enjoyed, with everything from an exhibition of apple pressing to advice on apple varieties. The Herb Society will have a presence in the garden hoping to see as many members as possible, and aiming to encourage as many people as possible to join us in the delights of herbs.
