Congratulations to Year 5 Rhinos 2006 - outright winners of the Herb Society Schools' web site launch competition, which Waitrose sponsored.

Competed herb garden

The prize-winning herb garden from
Cherry Trees School

In May 2006, Rhinos class worked for a whole week using 'herbs' as a topic for their NC work. They worked in D&T on the design of the herb garden.  They used a Maths lesson to work out the heights of the plants to help them choose where to plant them.

They voted for the best design and Jess won!

Using the internet, they found lots of information about herbs, including where they came from. They marked the places on a map of the world.

Chelsee and Lily made some tasty herb scones which were very quickly eaten by everyone!

On Friday , the school received their prize - a cheque for £150 and certificates for each child in the class. The certificates were signed by the Herb Society's president, Sophie Grigson.

Mr Hindle, a department manager at Waitrose, presented the cheque.

Nick says: "It is clear from the folder of work they sent in that the children worked very hard."

"Not only that," Rosie adds, "they enjoyed themselves, too."

…we planted the herbs and the soil was nice and moist…it was a good day for gardening - we all had so much fun together.

Jack (Y6) from sent us this recipe for parsley butter.
