Reffley School, Norfolk

Rosie writes

We have had news from a Norfolk school who made a herb garden outside their classroom last summer.

The children are now in Year 4 but they went back this term to see how the plants had grown and to work on the garden. They sent us reports and photographs.

Perhaps you would like to do the same?

Have you just made a garden outside your classroom, or in your school grounds? Have you planted some herbs?

Herbs can be used for attracting wildlife as well as for use in cooking. Look at our website to get some ideas.

We are making a children’s herb garden at Sulgrave Manor and would like some help from you. We would like you to send us some designs for the herb garden. Read the details here.

What the pupils say

We usually watered the herbs every day in the hot weather. Jimmy and I saw some tall weeds growing in the herb garden so we pulled them out. When Jimmy was weeding he got stung on the hand by a nettle! Everyone looked after the herbs and the tags. Sometimes the tags got buried in the soil and we had to pull them up so you could read the names on them!

I sorted out the wood that went around the herb beds. Then I helped to pour out the soil from the bags. When we had got the soil into the beds we smoothed it out using rakes. I set a lovely purple plant in the middle of one bed. Then we had to water it in.

We had all different herbs and we had to pull out the weeds and set the herbs into the beds. Then we had to water them really well. After a week we came back to them and they had grown really well! We made sure that we remembered to water the herbs so that they didn't dry out in the hot weather. We enjoyed touching the herbs and smelling them. We liked the lemon grass. \we had to get Mrs Blundell to pull up a really big stinging nettle! I haven't been back to the beds since I was in Year 3. I must go back and see how the herbs are now!

When we planted the beds Mrs Twell said to be careful of your hands so we wore gloves. Callum and I had our gloves on when we planted the stinging herb. We watered them three times a week. It was quite good when the wood bars went around to protect the herbs. All of a sudden they seemed to grow a lot! The stinging herb had beautiful shaped leaves and lovely reddy orangey fire coloured flowers. When I walk to school in the mornings I go passed them and I can see that they have grown a lot!
